In 2005, Dr. Mead Killion of Etymotic Research set out to solve one of the most troubling issues facing active duty warriors and the Veterans Administration. An alarmingly high percentage of warfighters return from active duty with some form of hearing damage and tinnitus. Hearing damage caused by exposure to their own or nearby weapons, blasts from improvised explosive devices (IEDs), artillery fire and/or long-term exposure to noise from combat vehicles or aircraft. The cost to American taxpayers is over $1.2 billion annually for hearing aids, rehabilitation and tinnitus therapy, and it costs the armed forces the loss of highly-experienced warriors whose fitness for duty has been compromised by ear damage. Most regrettable is the cost to the warriors who unnecessarily give up their good hearing for their country and thereafter live with the consequences. After several years of development, Etymotic Research introduced BlastPLGĀ® earplugs, a unique line of electronic hearing protection. GunSportPRO earplugs (GSP15) are an extension of this same technology.

Etymotic Research, Inc. is an engineering-driven research, development and manufacturing company. The name "Etymotic" (pronounced "et-im-oh-tik.") means "true to the ear."
